Mother's Day

My wife, two two kids and I were seated inside our van one recent night. We were going to eat out.
"Did you guys know that it'll be Mother's Day this Sunday?" I asked my two kids.
"Oh, I didn't know that," my 5-year old said. "We should surprise Mommy."
Uh-huh.
"We should bake her a cake and buy her flowers," he said.
My wife, I repeat, was with us in the van.
"Well," I said. "If we bake Mommy a cake and buy her flowers, that won't be a surprise anymore, wouldn't it?"
Silence. More silence.
"But we won't tell her the color," my 5-year old said. "That'll be the surprise."

The best 'surprise' for mom can often be a day of peace, quiet, alone time, a clean house, etc. - it's amazing how much stress celebrating mothers day can bring.

Awww... that's sweet of them. I agree with Jan - a day "off" is always the very best surprise for me! Even just a few hours.

Oh yeah, the surprise for us moms is all about the color. Usually, the kids give that up, too, don't they?

hehehe ... my husband went out last weekend with our daughter and when they got home, she proceeded to announce what they had purchased for me ... he Dad shuffled her off but it was too cute! Got to love the honesty!
